Bruno Fernandes’ double and Edinson Cavani’s stoppage time strike cancelled out Bernard’s opener for Carlo Ancelotti’s men to ensure that United bounced back from disappointing loses to Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir in the past week.
United had their first sniff on goal in the 17th minute when Anthony Martial shot just wide after a half-cleared corner found him in the Everton box.
But it was the home side who took the lead route one style just three minutes later. Jordan Pickford’s goal kick was headed by Dominic Calvert-Lewin onto the path of Bernard, and the Brazilian found the bottom corner with his shot through Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s legs.
Everton’s lead lasted just five minutes and it was Bruno Fernandes who got United’s equaliser, heading home unmarked from Luke Shaw’s pinpoint delivery.
Lucas Digne almost restored Everton’s lead in the 28th minute after being found by Bernard, but the Frenchman’s effort struck the post with his effort with teammates in a better position to finish off the move.
The Toffees’ profligacy was duly punished by the Red Devils in the 32nd minute when Fernandes’ cross, intended for Marcus Rashford, evaded everyone and sailed into Pickford’s net.
As Everton pressed for an equaliser late in the second half, gaps opened up at the back and United took advantage to finish them off as substitute Cavani’s low finish from Fernandes’ pass sealed three precious points.
