Former Chelsea Striker Criticizes Lampard For Playing Werner Out Of Position

Former Netherlands forward Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink does not understand why Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard plays Timo Werner out of position.

Hasselbaink has labeled the Germany international as the ‘real deal’ and questioned Lampard’s decision to frequently play him out of his natural position.

Werner joined the Premier League side from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £53m during the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old was expected to be the Blues main man in front of goal but that has not always been the case.

The former Stuttgart man has often been shifted to the flanks to accommodate either Tammy Abraham or Kai Havertz to play as a false nine.

Werner started as the main striker against Southampton over the weekend, where he scored twice and provided one assist as Chelsea settled for a 3-3 draw against the Saints.

“He [Werner] is the real deal,” Hasselbaink said on Sky Sports.

“He is very sharp, he turns the center-back quickly, and there is only one thing in his mind. He is not somebody who likes to play with back to goal, he likes to see it and make the run on the shoulder of the center-backs.

“I like him when he plays through the middle, he does drift to the left, and then comes back to the middle, he is a top striker.

“His runs are limited if he plays on the left as he can only cut back in, he is more restricted and he likes to be free and make runs off the shoulder.

“I didn’t like to play with my back to goal, I couldn’t do it. For me what I have seen of him, he is the real deal, he doesn’t care how they go in.”

Chelsea will hope Werner comes to the party when they face La Liga side Sevilla in their Champions League group opener.
