The Blues defensive frailties reared its ugly head once again as a spirited Southampton side snatched a point at Stamford Bridge.
Lampard’s men went two nil up before the 30th minute mark, but Southampton pulled one back four minutes before the break through their familiar source Danny Ings.
Che Adams brought the game level after a mixup in the hosts’ defence twelve minutes after the break and Chelsea swiftly restored their lead two minutes later kind courtesy of Kai Havertz’s first Premier League goal.
Chelsea were gunning for their third league win of the season but a last-gasp Jannick Vestergaard header gave Saints a point in West London.
“In the first half, some of our football was great. At 2-0 up you want to finish the game off but we allowed them to score before half time and at 2-1 it is a different game,” a frustrated Lampard told BT Sport after the game.
"In the second half we allowed them to put pressure on us and gain some traction in the game. Obviously we then concede late on and lose the points.
"You can't split the team between defence and attack. In our first goal you have to give credit to our defence and attack as we worked the ball from back to front.
"It's the same when you make mistakes and give goals away. You concede as a team. Both have a direct effect on results."
Next up for Lampard and Chelsea is a Champions League group opener against Spanish side Sevilla on Tuesday, before a daunting trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the Premier League next weekend.
