'It Is Embarrassing' - Solskjaer Slams Man United’s Display In Spurs Mauling

Manchester United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has castigated his side’s performance in a 6-1 drubbing against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho’s men inflicted Manchester United’s joint-heaviest defeat in the Premier League - losing by five goals for the fourth time in the competition, and for the first time since October 2011 against Manchester City.

Manchester United went ahead in the opening two minutes when Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot but the visitors replied instantly through Tanguy Ndombele before Heung-Min Son gave Spurs the lead three minutes later.

United had a double whammy when Anthony Martial was shown a straight red card for lashing out at Erik Lamela on the 28th minute mark, a moment which proved to be the final nail in the Red Devils’ coffin, as Harry Kane and Son compounded the hosts’ misery.

Solskjaer’s men ended the first half conceding four goals before Serge Aurier and Kane’s late penalty completed Tottenham’s seismic victory.

Speaking to the media after the game, Solskjaer admitted that United’s display was embarrassing and insists it is the worst day in his football life.

“After 2-1 we were still in the game, after the red card everything went wrong . You don't win games by making individual mistakes, errors and a performance like that,” the Norwegian coach told BBC Sports.

"When we get the start we did, you think you have the game how you wanted. But you make bad decisions and then you're two or three down.”

“It is embarrassing, I hold my hand up, it is my fault. It is not Manchester United. The red is no excuse. The boy might be having an operation on his throat though! It is a bad reaction from Anthony.”

“But if that (Lamela) was one of my players I'd hang him out to dry going down like that. He shouldn't react like that.

"Its nowhere near good enough. When you have a defeat like this you have to look yourself in the mirror.”

“They are going away on international duty and that the ones that stay have time to work. That is hard as we need to get together and battle.

"We defend as a team, from the front. Whoever we are linked with doesn't mean it is true. We need as a group to get a performance as they were after the restart.”

“We were a good defensive team. But we can't be as open as we are today.

"It is not about getting players in but who is here. Today is the worst. I can't say any more than that. When you are 2-1 down you are in with a chance. 3-1 a minute later is hard.

“At 4-1 down it is about character and personality. We had to close their avenues to goal but we didn't come out with any aggression. There were a lot of wrongs . We need to look at everything."

He added: “It's my second language so it's very difficult to put it into words. It's a horrible feeling, the worst day I've had as a Manchester United manager and player.”

“I've been part of big defeats before and we've bounced back so we've just got to let the boys go away on international duty, find their mojo themselves and the others that are going to stay here, we've got to help them. After a result like this you need to clear your mind and head and look forward.

"Sometimes you make mistakes, that's part of life and we made too many mistakes in one game of football and that shows in the result against a very good football team. They are a team full of quality and we got punished almost every time we made a mistake."
