Atalanta Have Grown So Much, Claims Gasperini After Lazio Annihilation

Atalanta have made an early statement with a comfortable 4-1 win over Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night and coach Gian Piero Gasperini believes his side have now come of age.

The visitors from Bergamo ran riot in Rome as Robin Gosens, Hans Hateboer and captain Alejandro Gomez’s brace made sure lazio’s Felipe Caicedo’s 57th minute goal became a mere consolation.

Speaking to the media after the game, Gasperini insists his side could have scored more in the second half as they had a lot of chances and insists his team have matured making reference to La Dea’s 3-3 draw with Lazio in this same fixture last season.

“We created plenty of chances and perhaps could’ve scored more after the break,” the former Genoa coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“This is a team that believes in itself and has reached a balance allowing it to face difficult games like this with a strong personality.”

“I didn’t need to remind them that last season we were 3-0 up here and drew 3-3, because this was a different game and the lads remained concentrated.”

The Italian coach was asked about his team’s chances of hoisting the Scudetto after another fine start to the season but he quickly postponed any title talks and insists only Juventus, Napoli and Inter Milan can talk about winning Serie A now.

“No! We can improve, but the teams that can talk about the Scudetto right now are Juventus, Inter and Napoli. You can ask me again after 20 rounds…”

The result leaves Atalanta in second place with six points from their opening two games.
