Mourinho got the better of his former player for the first time as Spurs came from behind to beat their London rivals on penalties to progress to the next stage of the League Cup.
The pair were involved in a heated spat during the first half of the game, with Mourinho reportedly telling the Englishman: ‘*****g hell Frank, when you’re losing 3-0 you’re not standing up here,’ in reference to the Blues’ weekend match in which they went 3-0 down at half-time against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.
“With Frank the most important thing are my feelings to him are more important than any words that we exchange,” Mourinho told Sky Sports when he was asked about the incident.
“He gave me everything he had as a player so I never forget that.”
“My feelings will always be that I love him as a player, friend and professional.”
“The only thing I said was an opinion of an old coach to a young, talented coach, which was when the players need us is when they are losing.”
“When they are winning we don’t need to be the protagonist of the touchline.”
