Gian Piero Gasperini’s men finished third in Serie A last season and reached the Champions League quarter final in their debut season in the competition.
The Bergamo-based club also ended the 2019/2020 season as the top scoring team in the league with 98 goals.
Atalanta have been busy in the transfer market despite losing one of their key players Timothy Castagne to Leicester City, but De Roon is adamant that the Orobici have equally bought four good players.
The Dutchman has insisted that they cannot wait to come back despite admitting it has been a short break.
“There’s a great desire to return, we have had a short holiday, but we are charged and ready to play,” De Roon told Sky Sport Italia.
“We have managed to improve every year. First, we thought fourth was the best, then we reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
“Castagne left, but we bought four or five players and I have already seen two or three at work, and they are strong,” De Roon added.
“Then [Aleksei] Miranchuk will arrive and [Josip] Ilicic could return. We have a strong enough team.”
Josip Ilicic missed the last part of the season due to personal reasons but has returned to the Gewiss Stadium and De Roon said they hope to have him back ‘as soon as possible’.
“Josip still needs some time, he is training, he’s not in his best shape physically. But he’s recovering.
“We hope to have him with us as soon as possible because we are even stronger with his qualities.”
Atalanta kickoff their 2020/2021 season with a game against Turin-based side Torino.
