A goal apiece in either half by Daniel James and Jannik Vestergaard means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men can only boast of one win from their first four premier league games while Southampton will be happy with a point after having Kevin Danso sent off in the second half.
Southampton started as the better of the two sides, pinning United into their own half with their pressing game and Sofiane Boufal shooting just wide from 20 yards after eight minutes.
But for all their early intent, it was the hosts who went behind early as Daniel James continued his impressive start to the season by cutting in from the left wing before striking a sensational effort into the top right corner in the tenth minute.
That strike was James’ third premier league goal of the season; as many as Alexis Sanchez, who left for Inter Milan in mid-week, managed during his ill-fated 18-month spell at Manchester United.
After the break Southampton got their equalizer in the 58th minute through Jannik Vestergaard, who rose highest to nod Kevin Danso’s lofted pass past David de Gea.
United were handed a numerical advantage after Southampton had Kevin Danso sent off for a reckless challenge on Scott McTominay in the 73rd minute but the visitors failed to find the winner and only came away with a point in the end.
