Messi shocked the football world after revealing his intention to leave Barcelona on Tuesday.
The Argentina international has a reported €700million release clause in his contract but he is demanding to leave the Catalan giants by activating a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave on a free transfer.
Although his contract is set to expire in the summer of 2021, Messi and his legal team believe the clause will allow him to terminate his deal unilaterally.
Manchester City are said to be his preferred destination as he is keen to reunite with his former boss Pep Guardiola despite a purported interest from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.
Burley believes Manchester United boast the financial power to sign the six-time Ballon d’Or winner if he becomes available this summer.
“If you look at the clubs that have got the finances to do it, Manchester City, Chelsea have spent big already, Man United have the clout,” Burley was quoted by Express Sport.
“There is no doubt about it, Manchester United have the financial clout and the pedigree to go after a player like this.”
“Now, from their point of view, they’re trying to peg this huge gap back to Liverpool and City – what a statement that would be.”
“I just don’t know how all the finances would add up but believe me, Manchester United easily have the clout to pull a Messi signing off."
