Messi has demanded to leave the Catalan giants by activating a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave on a free transfer.
The Argentina superstar sent the football world into a tizzy after communicating his intention to leave Barcelona.
Although his contract is set to expire in the summer of 2021, Messi and his legal team believe the clause will allow him to terminate his deal unilaterally.
Having spent his entire career at Camp Nou, Messi has won four Champions League trophies, ten La Liga titles and six Ballon d'Ors.
The 33-year-old is said to be unhappy with the current state of affairs in Barcelona’s camp, and his misery was compounded when Bayern Munich tore the Spanish side to shreds in the Champions League quarter final game in Lisbon.
Rivaldo has insisted that it will be a disaster for Messi to leave Barcelona and admits Manchester City would be a good fit for the Argentine.
“It will be a drama for Barça to lose its biggest star without receiving anything in return.” the Brazilian said.
"I am sad to see that Messi could leave in this way . At a time so complicated by the current crisis, it will be a drama for Barcelona to lose their biggest star without receiving anything in return. "
“At that time it was seen as a dubious business, but considering what is happening with Messi, perhaps it was not such a bad solution to sell him for a good amount at the right time.
“Manchester City would be the best option. Despite his age, Messi has a few more years of good football left in his career and if he has the opportunity to play under Guardiola, he would soon shine in England."
