Football Pundit Slams Guardiola’s Tactics Against Lyon

French football pundit and analyst Julien Laurens has slammed Pep Guardiola’s tactics following Manchester City’s disappointing 3-1 defeat against Olympique Lyonnais in the Champions League quarter-final game at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Saturday night.

Laurens feels Guardiola should have played with his normal team instead of tweaking his tactics to match the French side’s play.

The former Barcelona boss made one change from the side that beat Real Madrid at the Etihad with Phil Foden dropping to the bench and Eric Garcia coming in at the back, but switched to 3-5-2 system to match the Frenchmen’s setup.

The minnows from Ligue 1 took a surprise lead in the 24th minute through Maxwel Cornet and defended well till halftime but Manchester City got their equalizer on the 69th minute mark when a cut-back pass from Raheem Sterling found an unmarked Kevin De Bruyne who curled the ball past Anthony Lopes.

The Premier League outfit looked like scoring the next goal but substitute Moussa Dembele scored twice in ten minutes to crash Guardiola’s side out of the Champions League.

Laurens has castigated Guardiola for how he sets up his team in crucial games and insists the Spanish coach should take the blame for his side’s exit.

“Massively. Sometimes it works, like against Real Madrid in Spain. Great, that works. But too many times it hasn't worked,” the Frenchman made a reference with City’s win against Madrid in Bernabeu, where Guardiola dropped Sergio Aguero for Bernardo Silva as the target man.

“It didn't work away against Spurs last season, it didn't work against Monaco three years ago because he messed up the second leg.”

“Why don't you play your normal team in a normal formation tonight against a team that is far weaker than you? Why do you need to adapt your formation to the opposition?

“It just doesn't work like this. He has to take the blame. He has to take responsibility. It has happened too many times.

“He has to step up and say sorry, I keep trying to come with ideas and it's just not working. If i was a City fan tonight I'd be really cross with what Pep Guardiola has done. He messed it up big time.”
