The 21-year-old Dutch defender will therefore miss the start of the 2020/2021 Serie A season as well as his country’s Nations League games next month.
De Ligt joined the Italian champions from Ajax Amsterdam for £68m last summer and he helped the Old Lady win the Serie title in his debut season despite some early struggles.
The former Ajax captain made 39 appearances for Juventus in all competitions and scored four goals but could not prevent his side’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Olympique Lyon last week which led to the dismissal of Maurizio Sarri as manager.
"This morning, Matthijs de Ligt underwent stabilisation surgery on his right shoulder, at the UPMC Salvator Mundi clinic in Rome," a statement from Juventus read on Wednesday.
"The operation, performed by Dr. Volker Mushal, assisted by doctors, Bryson Lesniak and Fabrizio Margheritini and in the presence of Juventus’ Head of Medical Department, Luca Stefanini, was a complete success.
"The estimated recovery time is approximately three months."
De Ligt will have a new manager to work under when he returns from the treatment room as former Italian international Andrea Pirlo has been appointed as Juventus’ new boss.
