After watching Lampard set up his side to tactically match Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on Wednesday, Collymore believes it only takes a young manager with gut to do that at Anfield.
Chelsea lost the match 5-3 but the Englishman was delighted with the Blues’ pulsating display in Merseyside.
Collymore, who played for Liverpool at some point in his career, has posited that Lampard will succeed at Chelsea even if it will take a second stint to do so.
"What happened at Anfield in midweek has convinced me more than ever that Lampard is the brightest English coach to emerge for a generation,” the 49-year old said on TalkSPORT.
“Going head-to-head with Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp isn’t for the faint-hearted."
“Whether that’s at Chelsea, or maybe he comes back for a second stint, he will be a winner at the club.”
“In 5 years’ time – and it has taken Klopp that long, remember – I would not be surprised if we are talking about Lampard’s squad like we talk about the German’s."
He added: “They(the board) have already acknowledged that by allowing him significant cash to spend on Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.”
“And if Kai Havertz pitches up they will be a real force to be reckoned with – and stronger still with the addition of a top-class keeper."
"Personally, I think the gap to the top is too big at the moment. But they might be ready in the next two years.”
“I can see them having a right crack at it. It’s all shaping up and pointing towards Lampard being the brightest English boss I can think of since Hoddle."
