After being booked in the game against Wolves at the Molineux on Monday for deliberate diving, Giggs has insisted James is not a diver, but rather suffers more fouls instead.
Featuring twice for the Red Devils in the new Premier League season, Giggs believes the newly recruited Man United winger has been fouled a lot, urging referees to start protecting the Welsh player.
“You’ve seen he gets kicked a lot.
“Sometimes when you anticipate it, it can look live a dive. The speed he’s going at it can look worse, but I’m not worried about that.
“He gets a lot of stick and referees need to protect him.
“I watched a lot of the pre-season games and he did well as he usually plays on the left.
“It gives me a different option as well if he’s playing his club football on the right. If I want to do that I can.”
James was signed by Manchester United in the summer for a fee said to be in the region of £15 million from Championship club Swansea City.
The 21-year-old pacey forward, who made his full Wales debut under Giggs against Albania in November has been named in Wales 26-man squad for next month’s crunch Euro 2020 qualifier against Azerbaijan in Cardiff.
James scored 4 goals with seven assists in thirty-three EFL games for Swansea City last season.
