Messi was asked to assess Barcelona’s performance so far, and without mincing words, the 33-year-old blasted his team’s attitude this season after seeing bitterest rivals Real Madrid win the top-flight crown.
Barcelona were leading the league table by two points before football was halted due to Covid-19, but could not hold on to their advantage after the campaign resumed.
Barcelona suffered their sixth league defeat against Osasuna on Thursday night at Camp Nou, a result which leaves the Blaugrana seven points behind Zinedine Zidane’s men, who won 2-1 against Villarreal at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium.
Messi was left seething with rage after Barcelona’s lethargic display against El Submarino Amarillo and admits his team-mates have to improve or they will be kicked out of the Champions League.
"We didn't want to end the season like this but it represents how the season has gone," the Argentina said.
"We were a very erratic, very weak, low-intensity team…We lost a lot of points and today's game is a summary of the season.
"We have to be self-critical. Starting with the players but doing a global self-criticism.”
“We are Barca and we have to win everything. We can't look at Madrid…Madrid have done their job, but we have helped them a lot.”
"If we want to win the Champions League, we have to change a lot. If we continue like this, we will lose the game against Napoli."
