The Premier League champions were outclassed by Pep Guardiola’s men and could have lost by a bigger margin if not for City’s profligacy.
Sterling admitted that the Manchester-based club have been disappointing at times this season but beating Jurgen Klopp’s men, who he labeled as ‘brilliant’, was a statement of intent.
“They (Liverpool) have been brilliant all year, we wanted to have a good game against them,” the 25-year-old told Sky Sports after City’s big win.
"We knew we were behind, have been disappointing at times.”
“We had a test against the current champions to make a point and we did brilliant. Next season has already started and we did well.”
Phil Foden was a constant threat against the Reds throughout the game. The youngster topped his stellar performance with a sublime finish.
The former Liverpool man was quick to hail his compatriot and insists the Citizens will have great players in the near future.
"This is a team that is evolving and changing, You can see the maturity Phil (Foden) is playing with,” Sterling added.
“I think in the future we have some great players."
