Lampard Tips Pulisic To Get Better

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has tipped Christian Pulisic to get better after the United States of America international put in a man-of-the-match performance against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.

Pulisic opened the scoring for Chelsea after 36 minutes when he waltzed past two Manchester City defenders from the halfway line, leaving him in a one-on-one situation with Ederson in the visitors’ goal before coolly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner. That was Pulisic’s second goal in as many games and his seventh in the Premier League this season.

Although Kevin de Bruyne equalised for the visitors with a wonderful free kick, Willian’s penalty 12 minutes to full time enhanced Chelsea’s Champions League prospects and helped Liverpool win their first league title in 30 years.

Chelsea secured Pulisic in a £58m deal from Borussia Dortmund in January 2019 but he remained at the Signal Iduna Park on loan until the end of the season before moving to Stamford Bridge at the start of the 2019/2020 season.

After spending the opening weeks of the season in and out of Frank Lampard’s team, Pulisic enjoyed a purple patch in front of goal, scoring six times in October and November, including a perfect hat-trick against Burnley in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old’s season was curtailed by injury at the beginning of 2020 but he returned with a goal against Aston Villa in Chelsea’s first game back from the coronavirus-enforced break last week.

“Christian came in last summer. Lot of talk about it. He didn’t really get a break when he got in the team. He was playing really well and gets a really tough injury,” Lampard said after the game.

“I wanted to protect him a bit against Villa, see that he could make an impact. He did that.

“I always planned to start him against Man City because I know what he can bring in these sort of games and he brought it. He did really well.

“He needs to keep working, he’s a young player but he’s got so much talent and he can get better and better.”
