Silva, who was given the armband last summer following the departure of Vincent Kompany after the 2018-2019 season, has confirmed this will be his last season at the Etihad stadium.
Morrison believes the Brazil international has the requisite quality to take on leadership duties for Pep Guardiola’s men.
“It's not just what you see on the pitch on a matchday, it's how players carry themselves, that humility,” the former Manchester City captain told Manchester Evening News.
“Being humble is a trait. I don't know the characters of the players to say 'he's got outstanding captain's qualities' but I've always been incredibly fond of Fernandinho.’
“He's not just an outstanding footballer but the way he conducts himself. He's got such a strong mentality and he's a proper man.”
“When I look at him, he's a player everyone at the club would follow, the players would follow him.
“I've often said it's not about the title of captain that players follow, it's the courage. Fernandinho's got that in abundance and for me he would be a standout candidate.”
Fernandinho joined the Premier League side in the summer of 2013 and has since made over 300 appearances for the Citizens, winning three league titles, five League Cups and one FA Community Shield so far in England.
