Aubameyang Could Have Challenged Henry’s Arsenal Record - Ian Wright

Ian Wright believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could have broken Thierry Henry’s record as Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer had he joined the club earlier in his career.

Aubameyang joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018 and has enjoyed a prolific return for the North London club, scoring 42 goals in 66 appearances in all competitions.

The Gabon international’s solitary goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Newcastle last Sunday was the 33rd goal he has struck in 50 Premier League appearances for the Gunners, making him the joint-fifth player to reach that tally in half-a-century of games.

Thierry Henry surpassed Ian Wright’s own record to become Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer with 288 goals across two spells before retiring.

Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I don't think [he’s under-rated].

“We’ve all known that Aubameyang has been a top goalscorer - everywhere he’s been he has scored goals.

“At Saint-Etienne, 41 in 97, at Borussia Dortmund, 213 games, 141 goals. For Gabon, he’s got 59 caps, 24 goals, so I don’t think he’s underrated, African Player of the Year.

“I think he gets the way he plays, he’s on the edge of things, on the periphery of things so you don’t see him doing anything else other than the most important thing in the game, scoring goals and he does it so prolifically.

“He’s someone that I believe if he was at Arsenal a few years ago, then the records would have been in danger because of the rate he scores.

“I don’t think he’s underrated at all. People didn’t want to take a chance on him, for whatever reason. He’s come to the Premier League and he’s more than capable.”

Aubameyang was the Premier League’s joint top-scorer last season with 22 goals and has also won the goal king in the German Bundesliga with 31 strikes in the 2016/2017 season.
