Mbappe Awarded French Ligue 1 Top Scorer After Covid-19 Ended Season

Paris Saint Germain forward Kylian Mbappe has been awarded the French Ligue 1 golden boot after the season was ended early because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Mbappe and AS Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder both scored 18 goals but the 21-year-old World Cup winner’s tally came in fewer games.

Mbappe played in 20 games while Ben Yedder featured 25 times before the season was brought to a halt.

Three of Ben Yedder’s goals also came from the penalty spot while Mbappe’s efforts all came from open play.

Olympique Lyon’s Moussa Dembele finished third on the goalscorers list with 16 goals.

This represents the second time in succession that Mbappe has won the top scorers award in France. He also scored 33 goals in 29 games last season to claim the prize.

Mbappe’s PSG were crowned French champions last week after the Professional Football League (LFP) chose to abandon the 2019/2020 season with 10 games remaining. The Parisians were 12 points clear of second place Marseille, with a game in hand.

The call came after the French government announced that all sporting activities in the country are banned until at least September.

The Coronavirus pandemic has infected 174,791 people in France while 25,987 others have been sent to their graves.
