Dier climbed into the Tottenham Hotspur stands at full time to remonstrate with the fan, who had got into an argument with the England international’s brother after Spurs were eliminated on penalties in the fifth round of the world’s oldest club competition.
Dier was restrained by stewards as things threatened to boil over and Spurs manager Jose Mourinho offered him his support afterwards, revealing that he would not condone any club sanctions against the 26-year-old.
On Thursday, the FA confirmed: "Eric Dier has been charged with misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3.
"It is alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder's actions at the conclusion of the Emirates FA Cup fixture against Norwich City on Wednesday March 4 2020 were improper and/or threatening.
"Eric Dier has until Friday May 8 2020 to provide a response."
Any sanctions against Dier will only come into effect when football in England resumes as the season is currently suspended because of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Dier has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham this season.
Tottenham were eighth on the Premier League log before the season was paused while they had also been comprehensively outwitted 4-0 on aggregate by German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the round of 16 stage of the UEFA Champions League.
