Clubs Shouldn’t Be Relegated If Season Ends Early, Says Brighton Owner

Brighton and Hove Albion owner Tony bloom has insisted it would be unfair to relegate Premier League clubs if the season is cancelled due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

The rapid spread of Covid-19 across the world has forced top European leagues to suspend their current seasons.

The Premier League have decided to postpone all fixtures indefinitely, insisting that the league will only resume when it is safe to play.

With many suggesting the league should be annulled because of the threat posed by the virus, Bloom believes Liverpool are worthy winners but insists it would be ‘unfathomable’ to relegate the bottom clubs.

"I don't foresee a situation, if the season's not played out, that teams will get relegated on a points-per-game basis," the 50-year-old said.

"I just don't think it's fathomable that a team which is not allowed to play out the season may lose out on 0.2 points based on this system, and also it does not take into account the strength of the team you have not played."

Brighton would be safe from relegation if the league was ended early as they sit two points off the drop zone, which is occupied by Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich City.

He added: "You may get a title winner, obviously Liverpool deserve it, you may use that criteria for European qualification but I do not see how anyone can vote for that, certainly the per cent needed (70 per cent), for teams to get relegated. I really cannot foresee that."
