The Red Devils’ bid to win their fourth European trophy were once again crushed by Pep Guardiola’s men in the English capital.
Wayne Rooney had equalized Pedro’s opener for the Blaugrana but Lionel Messi and David Villa both etched their names on the scoresheet after the break to tame the-then English Champions.
Barcelona could easily have won the game with a huge margin as the Premier League outfit were second best team throughout the game.
Ferdinand is well familiar with Messi, having lost against Barcelona in the Champions League final two years earlier in Rome.
Recounting the game, the Englishman told Copa90 that Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were taught an ‘absolute lesson’ by the Spaniards.
“Barca gave us an absolute lesson at Wembley,” the 41-year-old said.
“I was standing there watching them lift the trophy and me, Giggsy and Scholesy were standing together with our hands over our mouths and I said: ‘I feel embarrassed lads.’ “He [Messi] took liberties.”
“Messi was a killer, Ronaldinho was unreal, the free-flowing magician,” the former Leeds United man added.
“But with Messi, he’d do all of that but there was always a goal or an assist at the end of it.”
