Italy is said to be the most hit country in Europe with more than 30,000 confirmed cases and over 4,000 deaths.
The rapid spread of the pandemic has halted various sporting activities in Europe which include football, with top European leagues like Serie A, Premier League, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 being suspended.
Earlier this week, Italy's minister for sport Vincenzo Spadafora opined that Serie A will be back in May, a statement which is considered as a mere fantasy due to the current threat of Covid-19.
Gazidis spoke to Italian news outlet ANSA about coronavirus and the South African admitted that this ‘emergency’ must be arrested before football resumes.
“Football will return at the right time but not before this world emergency is resolved,” the 55-year-old said.
“The priority of Milan is and will always be the health and safety of our players and staff, of our local and global community, and above all the most vulnerable among us.”
“When we get back on the field, I am convinced that football will also play an important role in the recovery of the nation, both from an economic and moral point of view of millions of people who love this sport.”
Gazidis worked with Arsenal from 2008 to 2018 as Chief Executive before moving to Italy to work with the Serie A outfit.
