RB Leipzig Issues Apology For Ejecting Japanese Fans Due To Coronavirus Fears

German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig have apologised to a group of Japanese fans who were ejected from their home game against Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend due to fears that they were carrying the Coronavirus disease.

Security at the Red Bull Arena had been instructed to intensify checks on persons from potential risk areas.

Twenty fans from the Asian country were led away from the stadium ten minutes after the match began.

Coronavirus cases in Germany have climbed above 150 in the last two days while cases from Japan are approaching 1,000 as of Tuesday morning.

The 20 persons ejected from the stadium were participants of a yearly intensive course on sports business in Leipzig.

A statement released by Leipzig admitted: ‘A mistake was made on our part with respect to our Japanese guests... in light of this mistake, we would like to extend our apologies.’

‘As for our handling of the coronavirus issue, we will continue to work thoroughly and on a daily basis with the authorities in order to try and reach the best possible solution for all of our guests.’

'Given the reaction to the incident in question, we would like to state that we have since met with the affected group and have invited them back, as well as offered out sincere apologies again.

'We would also like to take this time to highlight our values as a club. We stand for tolerance, integration and acceptance and are completely against discrimination and racism in any form.

'Our team united players from 14 different countries and various cultures, which is something that we are proud of. During the incident which took place within a heightened feeling of concern surrounding the highly sensitive issue of the coronavirus, our security personnel chose the wrong course of action, which is something that we openly acknowledge.
