Sissoko played for 14 clubs in his career including Paris Saint Germain, Juventus, Valencia and Fiorentina.
The former Mali international’s last professional club was French Ligue 2 side Sochaux, where he played 13 league games last season.
Sissoko’s career kick-started at Spanish La Liga side Valencia, where he won La Liga, the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in a two-year spell.
Sissoko transferred to Liverpool in the summer of 2005 and won another UEFA Super Cup plus the 2006 FA Cup before leaving for Juventus in 2008.
His last high-profile club was Paris Saint Germain between 2011 and 2013 as he added a French Ligue 1 title to his trophy collection.
Upon his retirement, Sissoko told the Footissime show on RMC Sport 1: "If I am here this evening, it is to tell you that it is the end for me, I stop my career.
"It is a really complicated choice, difficult to accept. It is a really difficult decision to make, because I have always been involved in football, it is my life."
Sissoko made 34 international appearances for the Malian national team, featuring across four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
One of the first people to congratulate Sissoko upon the announcement was former Liverpool teammate Luis Garcia, who tweeted a picture of a jubilant 2006 FA Cup winning squad with the caption: “Our mate Momo Sissoko has decided to end his football time. Congratulations for your fantastic career Momo. Never seen a player run that much on a football pitch. All the best on your next Chapter.”
