Simeone Lauds Majestic Atletico After Win Over Barcelona

Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has hailed his men following their 3-2 win against Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana semifinals in Jeddah.

Los Colchoneros’ struck twice in the final ten minutes to book their place in the Supercopa finale on Sunday against Real Madrid at the expense of the Spanish champions.

Koke put the Madrid based club ahead just a minute into the second half, but the joy was short-lived as Barcelona got the equalizer five minutes later through club captain Lionel Messi.

On the 62nd minute mark, former Atletico Madrid star man Antoine Griezmann gave Barcelona the lead after taking advantage of Luis Suarez’s header which was initially saved by Jan Oblak.

Ernesto Valverde’s men were on course for a big win before Alvaro Morata and Angel Correa’s late strike ditched the Catalans out of the competition.

Speaking to the media after the game, Simeone praised his side for achieving the impossible by beating Barcelona.

"I think we must live it with calmness, that we qualified for the final. It is important for the supporters, it is important for the club, it is important for the players," he said.

"It was a very tough game against one of the best teams in the world. They are the best when it comes to possession, and to attack with it.”

"We suffered quite a lot during the first half. I think the second half was different, they kept their intensity and had chances until the 75tth minute, when something appeared that will always distinguish Atletico Madrid – the heart, the strength and the belief.”

"We faced a difficult situation, almost impossible. But, we had the feeling that if we could get an equaliser, we could win the game, and that's what happened.”
