Ljungberg: Arsenal Lack Confidence

Ljungberg: Arsenal Lack Confidence

Arsenal interim coach Freddie Ljungberg has admitted that confidence has been low at the Emirates stadium following the North Londoners 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Thursday.

Arsenal are without a win in their last nine games in all competitions for the first time since a run of 10 from February to March in 1977 under the tutelage of Terry Neil.

Spanish tactician Unai Emery was sacrificed last week for Arsenal’s poor start to the 2019-20 season after guiding the Gunners to a 5th place finish in the Premier League and a Europa League final in Baku last season.

Arsenal are in a mire despite sacking the former Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla head coach, but Ljungberg insists his men must arrest their poor form and start winning games.

"They look very short on confidence," the Swede said after Arsenal’s latest defeat to Brighton in the Premier League.

"In the first half they were scared to get the ball and a bit scared to move, they were just standing still. That's something we need to talk about.”

"They need to have a win, we need to dig out a win and get them some confidence.”

“They can do it because they showed it in the beginning of the second half and they did it really well for 20 minutes.”

“It's hard to say that when you lose at home, but they were very good in that little spell.”

"It's never easy when you sack a manager and you're low on confidence," the 42-year-old added.

"We started really well at Norwich. We started the second half really well [against Brighton] and I was sure we were going to win the game and get going again.”

"We get a sucker punch on a counter or as they play down one side. It's hard to take but we keep plugging away."
