Arteta Insists Saka Remains Arsenal's Penalty Taker Despite West Ham Miss

Mikel Arteta maintains Bukayo Saka will remain on penalty-taking duties for Arsenal despite missing one against West Ham United last weekend.

Saka missed the chance to put Arsenal 3-1 up at the London Stadium, with the home side going straight up at the other end to draw level and claim a point.

Saka had scored all two penalties he had taken for Arsenal this season but his missed spot kick saw Mikel Arteta's side squander a two-goal lead for the second week running as Manchester City closed in on the Gunners at the top of the table.

Arsenal return to action on Friday against bottom side Southampton at the Emirates Stadium and Arteta took the opportunity to offer support to his talisman.

"He loves responsibility, but he puts a lot on his shoulders as well," the Spaniard said during his pre-match press conference.

"Again, if he had any doubt about how much people love him, respect him and admire him at the club, I think he had a very overwhelming reaction from everyone in the building and the club.

"In the end, I think it can be something very positive that can give him a big lift because everyone acted in an unbelievable way towards him. He deserves it because of the way he is."

When asked if Saka would step to the spot again, Arteta replied: "Yes. If not, I will go on the pitch and pass him the ball and make sure he takes the next one."

Saka has scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists in 31 appearances for Arsenal this season.
