Adebayor Announces Retirement From Football At 39

Former Togo, Arsenal and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39.

Adebayor last played for AC Semassi in his homeland.

Semassi were the 11th professional club of Adebayor’s career, having turned out for the likes of Metz, AS Monaco, Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Kayserispor, Istanbul Basaksehir and Olympia in Paraguay.

Adebayor won the Africa footballer of the year in 2008 as well as the Copa del Rey with Real Madrid in 2011 while on loan from Manchester City.

He featured 82 times for the Togolese national team, scoring 32 goals.

Announcing his decision with a video on Instagram, Adebayor said: "SEA, from the highs to the lows, my career as a professional athlete has been an incredible journey.

"Thank you to my fans for being there every step of the way. I'm feeling so grateful for everything, and excited for what's to come!"

With 97 goals to his name, Adebayor ranks fourth as the highest scoring African in the history of the Premier League. Only Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Didier Drogba have scored more in the history of the competition.

Adebayor was named in the PFA Team of the year in the 2007/2008 season before earning a £25m move to Man City two seasons later.
