Cech Backs Lukaku To Find Form Next Season

Cech Backs Lukaku To Find Form Next Season

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is confident Romelu Lukaku will find his best form for the club next season.

Lukaku returned to Chelsea at the start of the 2021/2022 season to much fanfare for a mammoth £97.5m fee from Inter Milan but underwhelmed at Stamford Bridge.

The 29-year-old posted only eight Premier League goals; a massive drop from the 24 he managed for Inter Milan in Serie A the previous season.

Lukaku's performances tailed off after an impressive start and he found himself out of Thomas Tuchel's starting eleven on a number of occasions.

On the positive side, the former Manchester United and Everton striker still finished as Chelsea's top scorer with 15 goals from 44 appearances across all competitions.

In recent days, rumours have emerged that Chelsea are prepared to sanction Lukaku's return to Inter but Cech, who is now the club's technical and performance director, has given the strongest hint that the Belgium international will be staying put with the Blues.

"I personally believe he will have a great season," said Cech, who made 333 top-flight appearances for Chelsea and lifted the Premier League four times.

"Last season, we've seen how strong he can be at the beginning when he came, but unfortunately the long-term injury he sustained in a game against [Aston] Villa slowed everything down and then he had Covid as well.

"We could see towards the end of the season when he was fit and ready to go again how strong he is.

"We had a particular season as a team around Christmas with the Covid issues, he was one of those players affected.

"I have full confidence that he will bounce back, he will have a strong season."
