Rodwell Joins Western Sydney Wanderers On One-Year Contract

Former England, Everton and Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell has made a return to football by signing a one-year contract with Australia top flight side Western Sydney Wanderers.

Rodwell was a free agent after leaving Sheffield United in the summer.

The 30-year-old started his career with Everton and got a big move to Manchester City in 2012, helping the Citizens win the Premier League in 2014.

Rodwell had a forgettable spell with Sunderland after leaving Manchester City in 2014, and his refusal to leave the club when injured and taking significant weekly wages was featured in the club’s NETFLIX documentary, which led to widespread criticism.

'This move is really exciting for me, I've been looking at the opportunity to play in Australia for a couple of months and with my wife being from Western Sydney, the Wanderers was the perfect destination,' Rodwell told the club's official website.

'Australia is like a second home to me, it's my favourite country on earth, it's where my wife and her family are from; we love the place.

'I honestly can't wait to play. With the opening match being the Sydney Derby, everyone in my family will be there watching so it is a huge opportunity and something I am really looking forward to.

'I'd like to thank the club for this opportunity, and hope I can repay the faith they have shown in me.'

Rodwell won three caps for England.
