Arteta Rules Himself Out Of Contention For Barcelona Manager’s Job

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has ruled himself out of the running for the Barcelona manager’s job.

Arteta’s name has popped up in recent days about the possibility of taking over from Ronald Koeman, who was dismissed from his role as Barcelona manager after 14 months earlier this week.

Arteta started his career as a youth player for Barcelona but never got the chance to feature for the club’s first team.

The 41-year-old was appointed Arsenal manager in December 2019, having previously understudied Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, and led the Gunners to FA Cup glory at the end of the 2019/2020 season.

"I'm extremely happy at Arsenal and privileged to be here. My focus is here," Arteta told reporters ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

"There's been a lot going on there in the past few years. You have to overcome a situation like the departure of Lionel Messi, who's been a key player for many years, and I know that takes time. I hope everything works out well."

Barcelona have endured a difficult start to the 2021/2022 season which has seen them win just four of their ten La Liga games.

Barcelona have also recorded just one win from their three UEFA Champions League games this season.

While Sergi Barjuan has been placed in interim charge for the time being, Xavi Hernandez remains the outright favorite to take over the Catalan club on a full time basis.
