Barcelona and Boca Juniors will play a friendly game in honoring the one-year anniversary of Diego Marodona.

The match will take place at Mrsool Park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 14 December.

Barcelona, in a statement disclosing their acceptance for the event said;

"FC Barcelona and Club Atletico Boca Juniors will play the 'Maradona Cup' on Dec. 14, a game to pay tribute to the star Diego Armando Maradona when the first anniversary of his death is remembered."

Maradona had a two successful spell with Argentine giants Boca Juniors, a place he ended his career at in 1997.

Before joining Napoli, Maradona had played two years at Barcelona as he won the Copa del Rey, Copa de la Liga and Supercopa de Espana.

The Argentine great also won two Serie A titles with Napoli and guided Argentina to their second World Cup at Mexico 35 years ago, a feat many want Lionel Messi to achieve.

At aged 60, Maradona died from a heart attack in November 25, 2020, after battling health issues and undergoing emergency surgery for a subdural haematoma.

Ending his football career, Maradona ventured into managerial duties as he coached clubs like Al-Wasl, Racing club, Fujairah as well as the Argentine national team.

Following his death, seven people who treated the football personality in the days before his death have been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Reports are that, findings prepared by a medical board and forwarded to prosecutors revealed that Maradona was in agony for more than 12 hours, as he did not receive ample medical attention, and could still be alive if he had been properly hospitalised.
