Ronaldo received a yellow card after removing his shirt when he scored his second goal for Portugal in a World Cup qualifier against Ireland.
The 36-year-old is set to join up with Manchester United after completing his return to Old Trafford.
A statement by Portugal confirming their star man's release read;
"Cristiano Ronaldo was excused from his stay with the national team on Thursday," the Portuguese Football Federation explained in a statement.
"The yellow card he saw against Ireland, as it was the second in this qualifying phase, forces him to serve a one-match suspension, which will take place against Azerbaijan.
"This morning, the national team captain formed part of the group of players who carried out regenerative exercises in the hotel."
Ronaldo having missed a penalty in the first-half redeemed himself with a powerful two headed goals in the dying stage of the game.
Portugal are expected to play Qatar on Saturday and Azerbaijan next Tuesday.
Ronaldo after scoring twice for Portugal has established himself as international football's record goalscorer with 111 goals, surpassing the record previously held by Ali Daei who scored 109 goals for Iran between 1993 and 2006.
Ronaldo completed a £19.8 million move to United from Juventus earlier this week, having left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in 2009 for a then-world record fee of £80 million.
