In the last few days Ronaldo has been linked with a sensational switch to the blue half of Manchester with reports suggesting that the five-time Ballon d’or winner is disgruntled with life at Juventus.
Ronaldo reportedly asked not to be involved from the start in Juventus’ Serie A opener against Udinese over the weekend as he tries to negotiate an exit from the Allianz Stadium.
The 36-year-old has just one year left on the four-year deal he signed when he joined Juventus from Real Madrid for €100m in the summer of 2018.
Ronaldo won three Premier League titles and the Champions League alongside among numerous other honours alongside Rooney during a six-year spell at Old Trafford earlier on in his career.
Those achievements have made him a legend at United and Rooney believes that could be a stumbling block for Ronaldo to join Pep Guardiola’s side.
“I think Cristiano has got a very good legacy at Manchester United and I know how proud he is as a player and a person," Rooney told talkSPORT.
"I can’t see [him joining City], but it’s football so you never know. There have been a few that have done it but no one at Cristiano’s level. Obviously Peter Schmeichel and Andy Cole, but I just can’t see that as an option for him really.
“Financially of course he doesn’t need to do it. I think it’s more likely that it’s PSG he goes to."
