Zola Questions Chelsea’s Interest In Lukaku

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has questioned the club over their pursuit for Inter Milan marksman Romelu Lukaku.

Zola says he likes the team just like they were last season despite admitting the Blues lacked a clinical finisher in front of goal.

Despite their success in the Champions League last season, Thomas Tuchel’s side have not been ruthless in front of goal and are looking to add a potent striker before the start of the 2021/2022 campaign.

Chelsea are said to be close to signing Lukaku after their failure to secure the services of Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Erling Haaland.

Lukaku has improved a lot since he moved to Italy in 2018, having established himself as the one of the best strikers in Serie A.

He scored 24 goals in 36 league games to fire the Nerazzurri to their first Scudetto since the 2009/2010 season.

Despite his knack of scoring goals, Zola does not want the Blues to add the Belgium international on the grounds that he wants the squad to remain the same.

“Chelsea had an extraordinary season last year, but the focus was always on the fact that they lacked a goalscorer,” the former Blues striker and assistant coach told Tuttomercatoweb.

“They often created chances, and in some games, they were quite penalized. Lukaku comes in to fill that gap, but I liked Chelsea the way they were.

Zola also hailed forward Timo Werner for his contributions at Stamford Bridge last season. The Germany international had a torrid first season in England but Zola believes Werner did the ‘dirty job’ for Chelsea.

“Werner did a dirty job for everyone else, and the reason they won the Champions League is that he put others in a position to do well,” the Italian added.

“I’m curious to see Lukaku, but I liked Chelsea the way they were.”
