Last-Gasp Milner Penalty Takes Liverpool Eight Points Clear

Liverpool won their 17th consecutive Premier League game on Saturday after a stoppage time James Milner penalty gave them a 2-1 win over Leicester City at Anfield.

The win maintains Liverpool’s hundred percent start to the season with eight wins from eight, taking them eight points clear of Manchester City, who host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

Much of the pre-match talk centred around Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers’ return to Anfield, where he was in charge for three years and he nearly halted his former side’s impressive run after James Maddison cancelled out Sadio Mane’s opener.

Liverpool’s captain for the day James Milner sent his effort over from ten yards out when he was picked out by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross in the 13th minute.

The hosts got their noses in front in the 40th minute after Sadio Mane benefitted from Milner’s glorious pass to steer the ball past Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester goal.

After the break, Mane and Salah combined beautifully to slice open the Leicester defence but the former Southampton forward sent his effort just wide.

Leicester’s summer signing from Sampdoria, Dennis Praet, sent a fizzing shot just wide of the Liverpool post in the 73rd minute before the visitors got their equalizer seven minutes later.

Substitute Ayoze Perez slipped a through ball past the Liverpool defence which allowed James Maddison to shoot past Adrian for his second league goal of the season.

Liverpool were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time after Mane was clipped from behind by Mark Albrighton, allowing Milner to win the hosts all three points by sending Schmeichel the wrong way.
