A night that saw every single mistake punished, Tottenham Hotspurs were totally humiliated in front of their home fans and the 32-year-old, who played the full 90 minutes, was downhearted by the defeat at the hands of the German Champions.
Tottenham took the lead early in the game kind courtesy of a sublime finish from the South Korean attacker Son Heung-Min but Bayern soon found the equalizer through defender Joshua Kimmich, who was deployed in midfield by coach Niko Kovac.
Everything was going well until Robert Lewandowski scored the second for Bayern Munich, and later went on to grab his second of the night.
Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot but that was not enough to clean Tottenham’s blemishes.
The star man of the night was the former Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion winger Serge Gnabry, who scored four goals to put a nail in Tottenham’s coffin.
“I feel extremely hurt, I feel ashamed, all negative thoughts are going through my head, it’s embarrassing to stand here in front of you guys,” Vertonghen told TalkSport.
“It’s tough. I’m not talking about other players, I’m talking about myself, about my feeling to watch everyone around the club. It’s a very bad result and I don’t want to speak too much.”
Tottenham are back in action on Saturday in the Premier League when they travel to Brighton and Hove Albion.
