Mbappe scored a hat-trick at Camp Nou to help Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona on Tuesday and Haaland has admitted he was inspired by the Frenchman’s heroics.
Sevilla scored first in the opening seven minutes thanks to Suso’s deflected shot, but Dortmund got their equalizer on 19 minutes through Mahmoud Dahoud before Haaland scored twice on 27 and 43 minutes respectively.
"I like to play the Champions League and I was inspired by the three goals that Mbappé scored at the Camp Nou. I thank him. It was a beautiful night,” he told reporters after the game.
Despite his brace against the Spanish side, Luuk de Jong’s late strike has given life to the tie and Haaland insists his team-mates must focus in the second leg.
The former Red Bull Salzburg man added: "We scored three goals and that is important, but we will have to go out and attack. We have to continue and be solid.”
"It was not good to let in two goals, but it is good to score three away from home and take them with us. We had a good plan."
Finally, the 20-year-old showered praise on Edin Terzic, who will not continue as the coach of Dortmund next season.
Haaland concluded: “Coach Terzic was very good and today I have been talking a lot with him about the game. He said that today would be my day and that I would have my opportunities and I did so. It was really an important victory."
