Danilo Bemoans Juventus’ Poor Start After Defeat Against Porto

Juventus were beaten 2-1 by FC Porto at the Estadio do Dragao in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg on Wednesday and defender Danilo has rued his team-mates’ poor start to the game.

The Bianconeri went down by a goal just 63 seconds into the game when Rodrigo Bentancur’s misplaced back-pass was pounced home by Iran international Mehdi Taremi.

Andrea Pirlo’s men could not recover from that early setback as they lacked the guile to open up the hosts.

The visitors had a double whammy when Moussa Marega slotted home a Wilson Manafa low cross to make it 2-0 just a minute after the interval.

Federico Chiesa handed Juventus a lifeline in the tie when he pulled one back during the dying embers of the game.

“This is the Champions League, we knew it was going to be a tough game against a team that works really hard and prepares for this type of fixture. We certainly cannot go around gifting them goals the way we did tonight,” Danilo told Sky Sports Italia after the game.

“This is not the game we expected. Maybe we need to remember that games start from 0-0 and the first minute, so we woke up too late.

“After that, it’s difficult to regain your confidence, as they seem to reach every ball first and it’s a struggle to find spaces.”

Danilo team-mate Alex Sandro echoed what his compatriot said, insisting they started the game badly and compared the defeat against the Portuguese side to the one against Napoli last weekend.

“We knew that the first half was bad, but the second was better and we are well aware that we must start the second leg the way we ended this match,” the Brazilian said.

“There were big mistakes on two incidents and they took advantage to score two goals, so we need to be more concentrated in these situations.”

“We talked about this after the Napoli game, as that was more or less the same thing,” Sandro added.

“Again we started that match badly and ended it much better, so what we need to do now is learn to start strong.

“Having said that, we did score a goal this evening and hopefully it can set us up to do better in the second leg.”
