The Nerazzurri bowed out of the Champions League after finishing last in Group B with six points.
Inter Milan had won only one game from their opening five matches and a win against Shakhtar Dontesk in the final day at San Siro could have sent the Italians to the next round of the competition, but Antonio Conte’s men lacked the cutting-edge as they settled for a 0-0 draw against the Ukrainian giants.
Handanovic was assessing Inter Milan’s performance in the group stage after the game and the 36-year-old admitted his team-mates did not deserve to go through.
“It was a balanced group, I think we lost it both in Kiev and here. We could’ve done better, but there’s no time to cry over spilt milk, we have to focus on Serie A and the Coppa Italia,” the former Lazio and Udinese keeper told Sky Sport Italia.
“Evidently, Inter are not yet ready for the Champions League. The points speak clearly, we won only one game out of six, that’s not enough and we didn’t deserve to go through.
“We had to score tonight, we didn’t, and frankly I expected Shakhtar to want something more than the draw, but they seemed content with third place.
“We know there’s a bad taste in the mouth after going out of the Champions League, but we can’t cry about that now, we have to focus on the next match this weekend in Serie A.”
