The Best Of Hazard Hasn’t Been Seen For A Very Longtime, Says Ex-Blue

Former Republic of Ireland forward Tony Cascarino has insisted that Belgium superstar Eden Hazard has failed to live up to expectations at the Santiago Bernabeu.

After spending six years in Chelsea following a move from French Ligue 1 side Lille, Hazard made his dream switch to Real Madrid in the summer of 2019 in a deal worth around €100 million.

A move to play under his idol Zinedine Zidane did not go as planned, having endured a torrid time in his first season in Spain where he was limited to only 22 games for the Los Blancos in the Champions League and La Liga scoring just one goal in the process.

The 29-year-old was unavailable for Los Blancos for the beginning of this campaign due to his chronic injuries but has recovered to play just a game in La Liga, scoring one goal.

Cascarino, who once played for Chelsea during his playing days, admitted that Hazard is very talented, but has failed to live up to his own standards since moving to Madrid.

“Eden Hazard is an incredibly gifted player. But he’s had a really difficult time since he went to Real Madrid for that huge fee,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

“Injuries and obviously the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t helped him. It’s affected his career, but what a talent he can be for Belgium.

“He went to Real Madrid to become the best player in the world. He even mentioned that he talked about that when he joined Madrid. But what a difficult time he’s had since he’s joined. It’s been really hard on him. He’s found it tough.

“Obviously injuries have played a huge part in it. He went to Real Madrid and apparently was a tad overweight, he lost his confidence. But he seems to recover his fitness of late.

“Belgium misses him. I can remember his performance against Brazil in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup. It was him and Neymar both out on the right and Hazard outplayed Neymar all night. He was just superb.

“I really miss seeing Hazard being Hazard because he is a great player when he’s on.
