Man City Coach Guardiola Plays Down Barca Link

Pep Guardiola has been tipped to return to Barcelona following the exit of former club supremo Josep Maria Bartomeu, but the Manchester City head coach says he wants to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola is in his final year as Manchester City manager and news have been rife in the Spanish media that the former Bayern Munich boss is in line to return to Catalonia, with Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font eager to arrange a reunion between the 49-year-old and Lionel Messi.

He began his coaching career with his boyhood club in 2008, and led them to dominate Europe by winning 14 trophies in four years, before joining Bayern Munich in the summer of 2013 after one sabbatical year.

The Spanish tactician has ruled out the possibility of returning to the Blaugrana, insisting he is eager to earn a new contract with the Citizens.

"My period as Barcelona manager is over. I think once in a lifetime you have to do things," Guardiola said after watching the his men beat Sheffield United 1-0 at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.

"There are incredible people who can be in charge there, now for example Ronald Koeman. It's over, I will come back to my city to see my club, to watch the game, it's done."

Next up for Manchester City and Guardiola is the third fixture of their Champions League group stage against Greek giants Olympiacos on Tuesday.
