Harry Kane Refutes Diving Allegations

Tottenham Hotspurs striker Harry Kane has refuted allegations that he tried to seduce referee Martin Atkinson into giving him a late penalty against Arsenal in the North London derby on Sunday.

Kane and Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos tangled in the penalty area in the dying embers of the game, which ended 2-2, but the referee allowed the game to continue, denying Tottenham a second spot kick for the day.

Numerous pundits opined after the game that the England captain dived in an effort to win the referee’s favour but Kane was having none of it.

Sky pundit Graeme Souness said: "I think Kane is looking for a penalty. He is waiting to go down.

"The defender has got his hands on his back but that kind of contact would not justify that fall."

Jamie Redknapp added: "Harry was looking for a penalty. He uses his body as well as any striker."

“I think it was that stage of the game where [Sokratis] makes a tired tackle,” Kane told Sky Sports afterwards.

“I think if I am on the halfway line I get it, if I’m in the box it’s 50-50. The ref probably thinks I am looking for it but all I’m trying to do is shield the ball.

“But it is what it is. It’s one of them. It could be given in some games but it wasn’t today. You get on and move on.”

Kane’s goal on Sunday was his tenth in the North London derby, putting him on par with Emmanuel Adebayor and Bobby Smith as the derby’s top scorer.
