Mourinho Slams ‘Lazy’ Tottenham After Everton Defeat

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho was left frustrated after his side succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Everton in the opening-day of the Premier League on Sunday.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's superb second-half header was enough to secure an impressive victory for the Toffees at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The hosts were second best throughout the game and could have lost by a bigger margin if not for the visitors’ profligacy.

Speaking to the media after the game, Mourinho, who lost on the opening-day of a league season for the first time as a manager, was not happy with Tottenham’s toothless display against Carlo Ancelotti’s men and insists the North Londoners were lazy.

“The struggle started in the way we pressed or, I will say, in the way we didn't press because our pressure up was very poor,” the former Manchester United and Chelsea manger told Sky Sports.

"I would say it was lazy pressure and when you have lazy pressure, you don't press and you let opponents build from the back and then they have players with incredible quality, which is not just Everton, it's almost everybody in the premier League.”

“When you let them play from the back then they are comfortable with the ball."

"It was too easy for them to play from back to front.

He added: "Technically it was not so easy because some players didn't have a pre-season for different reasons.”

“We had two days with everybody. Two days before the game is not where you can work too much.”
