Chelsea Aim To Challenge Liverpool And Man City For Titles, Says Werner

Timo Werner has opened up on his new life in England and insists Chelsea aim to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for titles.

Frank Lampard had a decent first season as Chelsea head coach, having steered the Blues to a top four finish and the FA Cup final albeit losing to London rivals Arsenal.

Chelsea have been busy in this summer’s transfer window, having welcomed four key players like Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Werner.

The West Londoners are said to be on the verge of confirming Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz as their latest addition in the coming days and are also mulling over the possibility of signing a new goalkeeper to battle it out with first-choice stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who had a poor 2019/2020 season.

Werner, who scored his first goal wearing the royal blue jersey in Chelsea’s friendly draw against Brighton last weekend, has opened up on his first experience in the team and insists Lampard’s side are going to fight for titles.

“The work with the manager recently has been really good,” the Germany international told the club’s website.

“He’s been showing and explaining to the whole team, not just me, what we can do on the pitch and how to improve on last season.

“He’s been great to work with and he’s been discussing his plans for the future, and how we want to battle with teams like Man City and Liverpool.

“I think Chelsea is a big club and with this team that we have, I think we can reach a new level. We have some very good players here and the manager is there to show us the way and help us improve.

“We’ve worked a lot on tactical things, as well as our strength and fitness, to make sure we are ready for the start of the season.”
