De Gea has been a subject for continuous criticisms by fans and the media, despite United enjoying a decent run of form.
The former Atletico Madrid man’s recent clanger came in a 3-1 defeat against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final, where he failed to make a couple of saves which led to Oliver Giroud and Mason Mount’s goal at Wembley.
Due to De Gea’s poor showings in recent seasons, many have opined that the Spaniard should be replaced by highly-rated English keeper Dean Henderson, who is on loan at Sheffield United.
Ahead of Leicester City’s crucial game against United on Sunday, Schmeichel has backed De Gea despite his shaky performance at Old Trafford this season.
"It can be very difficult and you've got to remember, and this is with absolutely no disrespect to journalists or pundits, but you've actually never stood in that goal," he told Sky Sports.
"You would classify things as mistakes or errors, and there are things that are glaring sometimes, but often this narrative can be created around a goalkeeper because it's the pundits' and journalists' job to educate and that's their job.”
"They're telling their educated opinions about goalkeeping, things like hand positions, feet positions, technical things which sometimes is quite damaging to a goalkeeper.”
