Schurrle's contract with Borussia Dortmund was terminated earlier this week, after the German was limited to only 33 appearances across two seasons before embarking on loan spells at Fulham and Spartak Moscow.
He took to his Instagram account on Friday to officially announce his retirement from football and additionally thank everybody who helped him during his playing days.
Schurrle wrote: "I want to let you know that I'm stepping away from playing professional football.
"On behalf of myself and my family I want to thank everybody who was a part of these phenomenal years! The support and love you shared with me was unbelievable and more than I could have ever asked for!
"Now I'm ready and open for all the beautiful possibilities that are coming towards me."
Schurrle played for seven clubs in his professional career which includes Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.
He also played 57 times for his country Germany and was instrumental in Die Mannschaft squad that won the World Cup in 2014.
His enormous contribution to Germany in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil was when he provided a cross for Mario Gotze to score the extra-time winner in the final against Argentina
