Goals from De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling were enough to send Pep Guardiola’s men to yet another cup semi-final.
Manchester City will now meet Premier League opponent Arsenal next month at Wembley.
De Bruyne was speaking to BBC’s MOTD after the game and posited that he was asked to take the penalty by Guardiola.
"We started really well, were sharp and put them under pressure,” said the former Chelsea man, who celebrated his 29th birthday with a goal against Steve Bruce’s men
"We should have scored more. We had a few problems with penaltes this year.”
“The gaffer asked me to step up and I have scored a couple now.”
"In my career I have played lots of positions and the gaffer asked me to try something new because Newcastle play with a back five. I just work for the team.”
Football has been played behind closed doors since its return due to the threat of the Coronavirus pandemic.
De Bruyne has admitted he does not enjoy playing without the fans but insists they have to play it because they are professionals.
He added: "We know it is really wierd and it is not something I enjoy, but we are professionals and we need to keep going."
